Beginner instrumentalists who are seriously engaged in music (in educational music or competent private teachers) and study all related disciplines attached to the main course, with almost the first theoretical lessons learning that there are 2 types of Gamm: major and minor. And it contains each of the gamps 7 consecutive in height of sounds. For example, in the one-meter gamma, the di-major sounds are built in such a sequence: up to-Mi-Fa-Sol-la-si, and then the same sequence of sounds begins again, but already in another octave, higher. The same thing happens in the la-miner gamma: La-Si-up-Re-Mi-Fa-Sol-la. However, at the stages of studying the musical letter and the elementary theory of music, students do not give any information about such a type of gamm as pentatonic. It is about it that is a conversation in this article.
What is it and for what is needed?
Pentatonic gamma It consists of sounds of the same classical minor or major Lada, but 2 steps of the skewers, creating an interval in the diatonic range in halftones (and not included in the main sober), are excluded from the pentatonic sequence.
In the La Minoric range, thus, the pure sounds of SI and Fa are not included in the pentathonic. These same sounds are also absent in the pentatonic sequence built on the basis of pre-major.
It is not known exactly which of the musicians and when began to first use such a way to write new music, improvisations or for fantasies on the topic of existing works. Now the pentatonic does not play only the drummer, since it cannot extract musical sounds - only percussion (noise, without a certain height). But most of the music researchers are still inclined to believe that the pentatonic sound is, most likely a guitar "chip", invented blues in the blues, as the blues itself are built on pentatonic improvisations and melodies. Such a reduced way is most convenient for playing guitar. - It allows you to invent, you can say, on the move, all new and new solo parties and multi-visit. It is for this that you need a pentathonic guitar: for comfortable improvisations, beautiful solo and unusual chords.
How is it built?
As in the case of classic gamma, pentatonic there are 2 lade species: major and minor. And pentatonic gammas are built on the basis of the corresponding diatonic sequences of musical sounds. It is most convenient to consider this on the example of the up-major and parallel to him La Minor.
For a better understanding, we first consider the classic sequences of sounds at first: in Major - from notes before, in Minor - from the notes of la.
In the range of pre-major between III and IV steps (notes of the Mi and F), as well as between VII and I steps (SI and TO) sheets, high-altitude sound intervals constitute halftone. In the range of La-Minor, the same sounds are the same as the di-major, but they are in a different order (begin with the notes of la). Therefore, of course, the intervals in the halftone are preserved between the same pairs of sounds (Mi-Fa and Si-up), but only now they have completely different numbers of steps:
- notes MI and Fa are V and Vi steps, respectively;
- notes SI and up to - II and III steps, respectively.
In the pentatonic halftone between adjacent sounds there (they are eliminated by the exceptions of 2 steps). These steps are (as soon as we found out):
- in major pentatonic - IV and VII steps;
- In minor pentatonic - II and VI steps.
Naturally, of two pairs of sounds in each Lada, those who are not included in the tonic sober (main chords of Lada) were removed. In our example (parallel gamma, D Major and La-Minor) removed the sounds of the fa and si. Therefore, pentatonic per major and la-miner sequences look as follows.

According to this scheme, it is possible to create a pentatonic in any necessary major or minor liberty, removing unnecessary sounds from it according to the relevant numbers of steps.

Guitarists for the convenience of playing and improvising are developed so-called pentatonic boxes, which are The sequence of sounds of one or another pentatonics that do not go beyond 4 or 5 of the lands, on all 6 strings of the guitar. These boxes are often represented in training materials graphically: on the schematic image of the Guitar Grifa with frets and strings. Strong pressed locations on such schemes are designated by circles, sometimes multicolored to highlight the tonic sound or auxiliary notes used in improvisation.
There are 5 positions of pentatonic appliqués. Below are graphic schemes of these positions. In the schemes with colored circles, a tonic sound is indicated. In this case, the minor pentatonic from the sound G (salt) is considered.
It should be noted that the pentatonic boxes are subject to the well-known system of chords called Caged, that is, moving along the genuine guitar of the one or another pentatonic boxing appliqué, get another tonality.
For example, boxing of any position above the designated salt minor pentatonics is easy to translate into la-minor: for this you need either all the applicature, or part of it from the tonic sound to move to the right according to the vulture of 2 Lada (boost to 1 tone).
The second feature of the boxes - the principle of parallelism of tonalities is valid for them . This means that the pentatonic series of sounds of any boxing of La Minor is fair and for the majer parallel to him. In other words, the pentathonic la-miner boxing application is fully suitable for playing Pentatonics to Major. The same rule applies to all other parallel pairs of Major Minor.
In addition, there is a conceptual pentatonic concept for which the presence on the basis of a minor pentatonic sequence of one or several so-called blues notes is characterized.
In la-minor appliqué, it is usually a note Mi-Bömbol (reduced quint). It turns out that the sixth sound appears.
How to play?
For beginner guitarists it will be useful to learn how to play the pentatonic. We give a few tips from professionals.
- First of all, it is necessary to study all 5 positions of pentatonic applicatures. This will help to quickly remember the location of the notes on the game of the guitar, as well as develop your auditory apparatus. It is also recommended to leave the played notes out loud.
- Learn to play better start with la-minor pentatonic. Before you need to have either a boxing scheme, or notes, or tabs not mistake.
- Pentatonic is played like this: you should start with the first sound on the sixth string and consistently move to the last note on the first string in the ascending movement . In this case, the indicated statement is strictly observed. Fingers can not be changed. Next, it is necessary, without interrupting the game, downward movement back to the original sound on the sixth string.
- If the game is performed on an electric guitar with a mediator, then you need to play a variable touch: The first sound is a blow down, the second is from the bottom up and so on, changing the direction of impact of the mediator with each sound.
- On the classic guitar usually gamma is fulfilled by 2 fingers alternately . But it will be better that there are several options, for example: I-M, M-A, M-I, A-M. Let all fingers develop equally.
